Great Teacher Onizuka and the School Rumble series are based in a high school setting with a large host of quirky characters. The male leads, Onizuka in GTO and Harima Kenji in School Rumble, offer the cliched but lovable delinquent/bad-ass complex with a softer side.

Just read the regular GTO. Early years is the prequel, it's about Onizuka back when he was a delinquent. 14 days happens in the middle of GTO I think, but it's not a huge deal as it came afterwards. I never watched the anime, but I read all of the regular GTO series and it's absolutely fantastic. Definitely one of my favorites.
