The 82Z I tried had great action and free-blowingness, but its tone wasn't nearly as good as a Keilwerth SX, nor as a Selmer II or B&S. It is my opinion that Yamaha makes very reliable and trustworthy saxophones, but lacking some charachter that other horns have. This is especially true, in my opinion, for the 62II.

The Yamaha 82z is a great professional alto sax from Yamaha. It has great intonation, excellent ergonomics, and a flexible, medium bright tone that works well for all kinds of playing. With new horn prices rising all the time, this is a great deal on a good playing 82z.

Still, the 82Z is the most free-blowing, flexible, "brilliantly rich" and resonant sounding saxophone I have played. I like the key action on the 82Z significantly better than on that Ref. 54. The Ref. 54 simply lacked the pop of the 82Z's action, which I attribute to the spring length (I could be wrong).

YAMAHA just had more Alto's at the show. My favorite Tenor was a toss between the un-Lacquered and the Silver Plate, but there was no Gold Plate to try. I did not care for any of the Lacquered 82Z's and it was a surprise since I love my Black 875. It seemed most the guys playing the Tenor liked the Silver or un-Lacqered also.
