I'm really grateful to Yamaha for lending this Yamaha Custom 82Z to me for a few weeks to test. Over the years I've played Yamaha saxes quite a bit. My alto is a Yamaha Purple Logo YAS 62 which I bought new in the eighties - and I love it! But the Yamaha tenors I've tried before didn't have the sound I was looking for.

All in all I'm very impressed with the Z alto - much more so than I was with the tenor. I've always said that Yamaha should make a 'super Yamaha', and perhaps this is it. Then again, it's interesting to note how strikingly similar it is to the 62.

The 875 is a custom pro model and only suite a certain person. Custom horns are ok but the player would have to pick the horn that is really what they're comfortable with. Each custom is a one of a kind so go with the 62, the 62 is the best design by Yamaha and that is why they brought back the design with the YAS-62 Series 2

The Yamaha Custom Z Alto Saxophone is an excellent professional level saxophone. The saxophone is in good repair with pads and all mechanisms in good condition. It has great intonation throughout the range of the saxophone. It has high F# and front F auxillary keys. The action of the keys is great and a huge step up from other instruments.

From a classical perspective, I play a custom Z alto and while it is a great saxophone, there are better horns in my opinion. The Z is more freeblowing than the EX and the bottom end speaks much easier on a Z, but the intonation is far better on the EX (in my experience).
